How to pack a parcel so it survives Lahore traffic and heat

A parcel is handled at least six times and may make the trip three times. Two rules cover most of it: nothing inside can move, nothing outside can come off. Plus the box size that keeps the charge down.

A parcel in Lahore gets handled at least six times between your table and the customer's door, spends part of a day in a van with no climate control, and may make that trip three times if the customer is not in. Packing for that is different from packing for a shelf.

Two rules cover most of it. Nothing inside should be able to move, and nothing outside should be able to come off. Everything below is one of those two rules applied to a specific failure.

Use the smallest box the item survives in

Start here, because it is the only packing decision that changes what you pay. If the scale weight is 5 kg or less, the charge is worked on the larger of the scale weight and the dimensional weight, and dimensional weight is length by width by height in centimetres divided by 5000.

A 200 gram phone case in a 30 by 25 by 15 cm carton has a dimensional weight of 2.25 kg, which rounds up to 2.5 kg and costs PKR 340 inside Lahore City instead of PKR 180. The filler cost PKR 160 on every parcel. Chargeable weight versus actual weight works the formula through, and the pricing calculator will price any box you are considering.

Halving any one dimension halves the dimensional weight outright, so the longest side is where the money is.

Stop the contents moving

Movement is what breaks things, not impact. A rigid item with 2 cm of space around it in a van on Ferozepur Road travels a surprising distance over an hour.

  • Fill the void. Air pockets let the item build momentum before it hits the wall of the box
  • Wrap first, then fill. Bubble wrap directly against the item, filler between the wrap and the box
  • Two items in one box get a divider or individual wrapping, because they will otherwise grind against each other
  • Shake the sealed parcel next to your ear. If you can hear anything shift, open it and add filler

Seal across the opening, not along it

Tape along the seam holds the flaps shut. Tape across the opening holds them shut when the box is lifted by one flap, which is how boxes are actually lifted. Run tape across the centre seam and then across both ends, and do the same on the bottom. A box that opens in a van spills into other people's parcels.

Reused boxes need their old tape and old labels removed. A second barcode on a parcel is a scan that goes to the wrong order.

Heat is a Lahore-specific problem

A van in June is substantially hotter than the street. Anything that softens, melts, separates or sweats behaves differently in it than on your shelf.

  • Chocolate, wax, candles, some cosmetics and some adhesives will deform. Test one in a parked car for two hours before you ship a hundred
  • Liquids expand. Leave headroom in the bottle and tape the cap, then bag the bottle separately inside the box
  • Pressed powders crack. A cosmetic compact needs a rigid insert rather than soft filler

The label goes on the largest flat face

One label, on the biggest flat surface, not across a seam and not around a corner. A label across a seam tears when the box is opened. A label on a corner cannot be read by a scanner without the parcel being turned.

Cover the label with clear tape if the surface is at all textured or if the parcel might meet rain. A scratched barcode means manual entry at every one of the six handling points. Labels and load sheets covers getting the handover itself right.

Pack for three attempts, not one

Our default is three delivery attempts, configurable to five. A parcel that is refused comes back to the warehouse, is scanned into stock, and goes out again. The packaging makes that round trip with it.

Practical consequence: packaging that survives exactly one journey will arrive at the second attempt looking handled, and a customer who was already hesitant refuses a tired-looking box. If your return rate is above a few percent, your packaging is making three trips often enough to matter. Why COD parcels come back covers the reasons behind the attempts themselves.

A five-item check before the rider arrives

  1. 01Shake it. Nothing moves inside
  2. 02Press the top and bottom seams. Neither gives
  3. 03One label, flat face, readable, no second barcode anywhere on the box
  4. 04Smallest box the item survives in, longest side as short as it can be
  5. 05If there is liquid, it is bagged before it was boxed

That takes about fifteen seconds per parcel once it is habit, and it removes most of the damage claims a growing seller runs into. If you are still setting up, the first fifty orders checklist covers the rest of the operation around it.

Booking in Lahore starts at PKR 180 for the first 0.5 kg. Work out your own figure before you commit.
